WBCS MYTHS
The Answers You Need!

Is coaching necessary for WBCS?“Can one clear WBCS Exam without coaching?”The answer is simply YES. Several aspirants could crack the examination in a single attempt without taking any coaching because of their confidence, determination and persistence. If U have all the three(confidence, determination and persistence) during the entire cycle of exam, U can clear the exam also.It depends on his/her efficiency in self-study. Let’s start with Sachin Tendulkar. Everyone knows that Sachin is a genius. He is talented and awesome. But why did he take coaching under Ramakant Achrekar and numerous other coaches? Will he be as successful as he is today without his coaches? Good coaches and mentors can help their students a lot. In our opinion, what they do is – they told you what to read, what to memorize, and how to read and from where? Burden of students got minimized to a large extent. By good guidance and clear knowledge, they can help students learn fast and succeed in the age of tight competition in an competitive environment. Coaching can become guiding force to keep you motivated, Test series and their evaluation is a must to increase confidence level of a would be WBCS aspirants. But only a good coach gives u Right Strategies+ Concise Knowledge. NO Coaching institute or online website can make a candidate an WBCS officer, unlike the claims they make. The combination can be best described as 50:50. A good coaching institute can play 50% part by providing strategies+materials, but unless the candidate put the next 50% effort(to implement the strategy and punctual study of materials as of BIBLE) he cannot become an WBCS officer. Wishing you Best Of Luck!!!!!

Is there any limit of number to attempt WBCS?Earlier, there used to be a limit of 4 (four) attempts for General category candidates in WBCS (EXE) ETC. Examination, conducted by the Public Service Commission. But at present, there no limit on attempt i.e. one can appear in WBCS any number of times provided the candidate has not crossed the age of upper age limit fixed by the Commission. The upper age limit for general category candidates of WBCS Group A, B & C Services & Posts are 36 and for WBCS Group D Posts 39. In another words you have unlimited attempt (Don't worry for attempt!!)if you should struggle wholeheartedly then surely crack WBCS within limited time frame.

Why Mock tests are important for WBCS?Mock tests give students a feel of the real exam. Revision is key to remembering all that you have studied. This is where mock tests help. Mock tests are important because of the practice they provide. Mock tests make students familiar with the style and scope of the question paper. After taking several mock tests, the aspirant is in a position to work on his weaknesses and to chalk out a plan to overcome them. Testing yourself is an effective way to improve your knowledge and ability to recall information. Mock exams, if framed right, can be incredibly beneficial for students. Helping them to see that is part of the challenge. They can help students to start revising early, to practise effective revision strategies, to improve their knowledge, to familiarise themselves with pressure, and act as a guide moving forward.

What are the common mistakes that candidates make before/during Preliminary Exam of WBCS? How to rectify it?Starting the preparation with an imaginary cut off in mind: Many people have this mistaken notion that there is some magic cut off, above which you are bound to qualify the preliminary. Remember always, there is no laid down cut off mark. If it is a tough paper for you, if you are a serious candidate, it will be tough for everyone, and the cut off will go down. Don't chase an imaginary golden deer. Believing thumb rules given by toppers: Many toppers advice students to attempt a large number of questions, so that your chance of getting more marks increases. I think you should borrow the investment principle that Benjamin Graham preaches in the book “Intelligent Investor”. You should always keep a margin of safety. Do not blindly attempt 170/180 questions. It is a sure shot way out of the prelims list. Unless you keep to this rule , you are bound to be bogged down by your own mistakes. Studying till the last day: All study and no revision is no better than no study. Keep this etched in your mind. Your revision should start at least a month before the exams. Do not listen to this advice, if you have started studying only a month before the exam. Delaying that test paper/Mock Test: Test papers are not practice boards to just score yourself. It is almost like reading pages picked from random text books. If you delay writing mock papers, you are delaying your selection into the civil services too. Group Discussions: We will let you in on a secret. Group discussions, in 90% of the cases, are a waste of time. You swerve from the path, and end up discussing that latest movie. Or it ends up being a debating competition where you are at each others faces to show who is the more knowledgeable one. Don't try to be all that. Your job is to study. Unless and otherwise it is a subject that you need help with, don’t talk too much. It saves energy and time. Being the late comer: Many people roam around the exam hall and finally enter the hall only at the last moment. We consider this a mistake. You should enter the hall well before the prescribed time. It is a time to reflect on your studies for the last few months, and congratulate yourself on having chosen this path. Find out what puts you in the mindset of a fighter and do that in those final few minutes. Filling the OMR sheet carelessly: It doesn’t matter how well you have studied for the exam, if you end up marking your roll number wrongly. You might think this is an uncommon error. Believe me, this is one of the commonest mistakes candidates make during the exam. Another mistake is to try to wax off a wrong bubble from the OMR sheet. Don’t risk you entire exam over 1/3rd marks lost. Not giving due respect to Aptitude/Reasoning paper: Do some model question papers and figure out how much time you need to put in for this paper. Remember, this is a purely marks fetching paper, the syllabus of which will be totally useless in the remainder of the exams. Studying exclusively for prelims: Preliminary Examination is only qualifying in nature. This means that it doesn't matter whether you score full marks or barely scrape through. Remember, whatever be the case, he/she scored the first rank even though he/she barely scraped through the preliminary examination. Worrying too much: Don’t worry too much about the exam and its result. WBCS examination is an experience that you will savour for many years. If you don’t enjoy preparing for this exam, then you are missing a lot. Believe in yourself and study things with a curious mind. From this side of the exam, the road that you traveled is much, much more beautiful. Best of LUCK!!!!

Do Someone prepare Prelims and Mains separately? Most of the aspirants often commit this mistake. Actually, there is nothing called Prelims or Mains preparation. If there is anything then it is WBCS preparation. Both of the preparations should go hand in hand. If your Mains preparation is not good, success in prelims has virtually no value. The time between Prelims result and WBCS Mains is so small that it is impossible to take a decent preparation. So, start preparing for Mains from day one and put last 3 to 4 months entirely for Prelims.

What was the key to remember tons of information?Forgetting is a part of life. The only way to remember permanently is to go for multiple revision. Recollecting what U have read at leisure time also worked for you positively.
-
How much time one should allot for studying every day ?It really varies from candidate to candidate. There is no harm in putting more number of hours in the study schedule. What is needed is a balanced reading. But the preparation should be consistent without interruptions. Average 5 to 8 hrs effective study is essential for success.

What is the best newspaper for the WBCS exam?In English you can follow The Hindu or Indian express In Bengali U can follow in ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA & EI SOMOY. Don't read the full paper(no MASALA news!), just the editorial part and then if you like you can read other pages relevant to contemporary affairs. But editorial(SOMPADOKIYO)is a must for (writing skill). Because at the time of your Mains exam,Language paper this will help you immensely to write down your answers.

Is it Possible to Clear WBCS in First Attempt?Yes,It’s Possible to Clear WBCS in First Attempt. Several topper had cleared the exam in first attempt but you have to follow the below strategies. 1.With right approach, it is possible to clear this exam in first attempt But don’t get disheartened if you fail. Don’t give up. Introspect and rectify your mistakes. Hit back with greater effort. When you missed getting a rank by 10 marks in first attempt, It was very disappointed. You should be more determined to clear this exam. 2. Get the right company Try to prepare with a group of serious aspirants. They will lead to your failure. Be very careful in choosing your friends. Consistency and discipline are key to success. We have seen lots of people who work very hard for first 1-2 months and later their preparation decays exponentially. Have a timetable and follow it religiously. 3. Make a Time Table Make your own timetable and give some time in between (say ½ hour) for relaxing. The idea is you should be comfortable with your timetable and not get frustrated. 4. Clear Prelims Well. Clear prelims by a comfortable margin. This is very important so that you start preparing for mains seriously without waiting for prelims results. You will not be worrying all the time about Prelims result while you prepare for Mains. 5. Practice Answer Writing. Practice answer writing language papers and optional regularly. It is the key to success at Civil Services. 6. Make Notes Make notes, or underlined the important topics, it will really helpful for revision. 7. Follow few Qualitative Sources Don’t spend too much time on Internet searching for materials, news etc. Many aspirants spend hours on internet and think they are preparing. But actually they would be aimlessly jumping from website to another without any value addition. It is better to follow few sources that are selective and qualitative. 8. Read Repeatedly Also many have this habit of filling their rooms with all kinds of books, material, photocopies etc., which they won’t study even one page. Buy a maximum of 2 books/Study materials per subject and read them repeatedly. You need not do research on each and every topic. You should just understand them and be able to give simple and clear answers in exam. 10. Coaching only when you are satisfied not because of success rate Advertisement Don’t be fooled by huge photographs of toppers in advertisements. Many would have appeared only for Test Series or Mock Interviews and coaching centers would claim that they were part of classroom coaching. 11. Have Faith Finally don’t get your confidence lowered by all the negative comments made by your friends and relatives. Have faith in your hard work. Promise yourself to work harder and prove all your critics wrong. If you work hard, then luck (God) will help you. Best of Luck!!!!!!

WBCS preparation is a long process. How can you handle frustation for long cycle of preparation?Draw a mind map, ask yourself "Why you will become a Civil servant?" Try to remain detached from most of the people who are not important to you. Less people meant fewer opinions. And fewer opinions meant less stress on your mind. Nurture constructive hobbies which gives you pleasure from within. Motivational video may cheer you up within an hour or so. You should have daily, weekly and monthly plans to achieve. These achievement gives you confidence. Accept your weakness and try to improve those areas. Be calm, humble and believe in yourself.

How can I study from my home? These days you can buy books/study materials from online. Every topper has studied the same set of books as lakhs of aspirants do every year. The difference is that toppers plan their studies and execute those plans well. They practice writing. They take tests. They are confident. And they also have some luck(90% consistency and smart effort+10% Luck factor).

What are the preparation strategies for WBCS?It has been said that – all things in this universe are created twice, once in your mind and then in the physical world. Stuck a paper on a wall in room saying- “I want a 1-digit Rank in WBCS” Motivation:-The source of inspiration may vary from one person to another, so it is good to keep yourself motivated at all times by hanging a painting, picture or a quote on your study wall/Table which motivate you most. Hence, find yourself around people who are encouraging and supportive. WBCS exams are not like any other Sarkari Naukri exam. It is difficult and you have to clear in many phases. From written exam to interview, it takes a lot of effort and it is quite normal that candidates do not clear in first attempt, Don't frustrated ever, just carry on without irrational expectation. Always remember, attitude is more important than aptitude. Health:-You can’t be motivated unless you are healthy. Have a healthy diet and regular exercise to be fit and fine.Try hard to restrain from Alcohol and smoking. Routine/time-table:-Candidates, who are in the habit of waking up late in the morning, need to change their habit as they will be required to bat during daytime on the day of the mains examination. Try to be more efficient between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Ways to fetch more marks:-No doubt, diagrams fetch you more marks but they should be drawn where required and must be relevant to the topic. For example, somebody who has taken Geography/Anthropology as the main subject must draw diagrams to get good marks. Study very selectively but making it strong:-Read a single book/Materials 4-5 times rather than reading 4-5 books for one subject. Memorising the topic:-One should be able to retain the points in long term memory and that can only be done once you have understood and analyzed the issues properly.Revise properly within a definite time frame. Remain Up to Date with Current Affairs & Social Issues:-Apply aptly while writing mains or essay. Making Notes:-Make short notes so that u can revise them on the night before the exam.Newspaper played the most important role in preparation. Avoid group discussions after the exam:-Do not discuss questions with your peers immediately after one paper as it may de-motivate you if you realize others fared better than you. The right environment:-Preparing for the WBCS exams would mean sitting for long hours in your study room. Ensure that your room is peppy and clean.Have proper lighting and comfortable seating. Have a picture of your icon or an inspirational saying on the wall or study table. Anticipate hurdles:-Do not get demotivated when you see a hurdle. There is no race without hurdles. The successful person is not someone who didn’t face any obstacles but the one who faced obstacles and overcame them. Have a break! It is not human to go on without breaks. A good break can refresh your body and mind. A change of scene can also give you a fresh perspective, thus giving you better ideas and pointers for your answers. Record your progress:-Regularly record your progress. If you are feeling down and out, go through this chart. You will feel good about what you have achieved and get that boost required to move on. “Just believe in yourself. Even if you don’t, pretend that you do and, at some point, you will.”
